Halloween
I loved Halloween, I mean who doesn't like running with your friends and collecting all kinds of chocolate. But gosh kids today, no wonder they don't give a whoot about Halloween. The city dictates when, where and what time they can go now. Plus gosh, we had such a big family's when I grew up, we brothers, sisters, and neighbors all stuck together. Now however... An older brother take his little one, no way someone might see them together.
Well being the good mom I am, I encouraged my kids to trick ot treat. I think its fun, as well. I think my oldest boy went till about 7th grade after that, the school has dances for them. :) and gosh the high school key club also decorates the school for them and has hunted hallways, where they pass out safe candy. That comes in handy when it rains. I always remind my kids to say thank you and be nice.
This year was no exception. My youngest is 11, and Halloween was dictated to be Thursday night 5:30 - 7 pm. Geesh it was hardly dark when it ended even. I really don't get it, I mean it's not like we live in the city. We don't have that much mischief, no fires in the dumpsters, no guns out on the street taking candy from kids, no needles in chocolate... All those things did happen in Columbus, though. All in all, it was a nice night, I met some parents from down the street I never saw before, saw some parents from the country that came in to trick or treet, and I got to see some of the cutest kids with smiles and laughing. Heck, I even got a real hug, from an admirer of my headless bride days. People around here, sit outside and party practically while the kids come get the candy. No need to ring a door bell in our town, they are great. Loads of chocolate, lollypops, bubble gum, and even the occastional pencil.
What I didn't like was trying to explaining to my boy, when someone sat on the driveway and handed them a flyer instead of candy. A flyer for a church, LOL my son was down right rude, and that wasn't right, but really, couldn't they just stay inside?? geesh sorry !!
I always think we Catholics have the strangest traditions but I forget about some these non-organized, over zealous Baptist or rather non-dominations Christian religions, where any Tom, Dick or Harry can be a preacher and open a church. Welcome to the church of Rev Jim LOL @ Taxi remember that ...
In our church, we learned our catholic holidays like All- halllow's Eve (where Halloween comes from) were picked specically to be near or on the days of pagan celebrations, for many reasons. One was to hide the fact they were Christians, so they wouldn't be killed for it, another to help ease the transion to get more people to believe in the one true god and not many gods like they used to believe. It's hard to remember that the catholic church was the first true religion and followers of Jesus Christ, and that all others were formed when they disagreed with the laws of the church and the pope. At least when you think of the Christians out there that are more strict then we are. LOL it really does make me laugh.
Thank goodness my relatives did come to this land to have religious freedom. My moms family to start one of the Presbyterian church's and my dads to be catholic. hehe Yup, I'm such a mutt.
